Monthly Macro Wrap

India’s CPI inflation eased to 3.5% in April 2026, below our 3.9% estimate and only slightly above March. Core CPI was stable at 3.4%. However, West Asia tensions, higher energy costs, erratic weather and supply disruptions are pushing food and input prices higher. We expect CPI to rise to ~4.1% in May, prompting MPC to stay on hold in June policy review stance unchanged.

Research Recap

Business Activity Monitor

ICRA’s Business Activity Monitor showed YoY growth easing to a five-month low of 7.6% in March 2026, hit by West Asia disruptions. Despite strong Q4 FY26 momentum, GDP growth is projected at 6.5% in FY27 amid oil, conflict and monsoon risks.

WPI inflation

March 2026 WPI inflation spiked to 3.9%, driven by fuel and energy amid West Asia disruptions. Core inflation hit a multi year high. Elevated oil, shipping and input costs could push WPI towards 4.8% in April and keep FY27 risks tilted upward.

Economic Outlook & Macro Trends

The MPC kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% in April 2026, maintaining a neutral stance. Policy rates were steady across facilities. The Committee adopted cautious guidance, highlighting upside inflation risks and downside growth risks while remaining vigilant to evolving conditions.
